Supporting Other Cultures

SANDBAG is committed to fostering vibrant, diverse and inclusive communities. We believe that a diverse community is one that values the difference in people and recognises that people with different, backgrounds, skills, attitudes and experiences bring fresh ideas and perceptions.

SANDBAG’s North Brisbane Welcome Hub is an umbrella for a wide-range of programs and activities tailored to facilitating the inclusion of our multicultural and refugee communities into the social, cultural and economic life of our region.

We are part of a network of Welcome Hubs designed to facilitate the smooth transition of new arrivals and refugees in their new communities north of Brisbane. The focus is on making meaningful connections between the wider community and our new arrivals and refugee families; and build sustainable relationships through the sharing of culture, knowledge and skills needed to enhance quality of life.

Our Aim

The Brisbane North Welcome Hub allows for and facilitates a broad range of activities which aim to:

  • Increase Cultural awareness about Australian culture for CALD (Culturally and Linguistically Diverse) community groups;
  • Increase Cultural Awareness for our staff, placement students, volunteers and service provider partners;
  • Provide a physical space for celebration of cultural and social events and projects;
  • Develop the capacity of new arrivals to communicate effectively through our English conversation class;
  • Provide referral support to our new arrivals and refugee families;
  • Promote training opportunities to CALD communities (e.g. Skilling Queensland Courses);
  • Provide general and specialised counselling services to our multicultural communities;
  • Facilitate networking between CALD service providers and volunteering groups.

We also host a number of Multicultural events and projects which are open to the public to celebrate, create connection and promote awareness of the benefits of a diverse and multicultural community.  Read about some of our community events and see what’s coming up.
