WHAT’S IMPORTANT TO US

The Sandgate and Bracken Ridge Action Group Incorporated, known as SANDBAG Inc. is an independent community based organisation that has been working within the Brisbane North Community for the past 25 years.

We aim to create community connections that strengthen and support individuals, families and communities and engage with people experiencing adversity due to poverty, homelessness, mental illness, domestic violence, disability, and discrimination due to age, gender or sexual orientation. SANDBAG works to break down barriers that exclude people from housing, healthcare, employment, meaningful connections, and to give people a voice. We assist and support individuals to access a safe space, resolve crisis, break social isolation, access health and community services, and build community.

Working developmentally, our values strongly drive not only what we do but how we do it. Actively living these values underpins the approach of all those who work for or are connected with the organisation.

Our History

Our history begins with grass roots community work in the early 1980’s in Bracken Ridge and brings us to the present time where we operate from two locations – Sandgate and Bracken Ridge – to deliver a range of programs, projects and activities to people within the North Brisbane catchment,

Whilst the work we have done over the years has changed what has remained constant is our commitment and belief in working with individuals, groups and communities to connect people to place and opportunities for participation.

Local Indigenous

At SANDBAG we acknowledge the local indigenous population known to be the people of the Turrbul Tribe as the original custodians of the lands on which we now operate and we pay respect to the elders past and present of the Turrbul and Jagerra nations and extend that respect to other Aboriginal people present.  At the Sandgate Community Centre we display the flags of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and the Australian National Flag each day to symbolise our commitment to welcoming and connecting with indigenous people.
